Jeanette Sanchez-Izenman, Acting Instructor
Jeanette Sanchez-Izenman is a director, teaching artist, dramaturg, intimacy choreographer and stage manager. She has her BFA in acting from the University of New Mexico where she returned to earn her MA in Directing and Educational Theatre under the mentorship of Susan Pearson in 2003.
While at the University of New Mexico, she directed a touring show for local schools (Calabasas Street). She also co-directed a mainstage production (La Posada Magica). Her work in the student-run Theatre X included: Each Day Dies With Sleep and Los Vendidos. She moved to the Pacific Northwest to attend the University of Washington School of Drama and achieved her PhD candidacy in Theatre History and Criticism in 2006. During those three years, she was a summer Drama School intern at the Seattle Children’s Theatre, where she remained working for several years in the box office and as a dramaturg/consultant for Jason and the Golden Fleece and Night of the Living Dead. Jeanette highly values public scholarship and earned a fellowship at UW’s Simpson Center for the Public Humanities in 2005. She was in the inaugural cohort of the Project for Interdisciplinary Pedagogy at UW Bothell where she taught theatre and performance studies for nearly a decade. Her classes focused on social change (Latino Theatre for Social Change and Theatre for Young Audiences) and outreach (Education and the Performing Arts) where she partnered with local schools to bring theatre education into their classrooms via UWB students leading creative drama exercises. At UWB, she also spearheaded a staged reading series called Third Thursday Theatre in order to make theatrical process accessible on a commuter campus. She found that students often had jobs and families and could not commit to a full rehearsal process necessary to stage a full production of a show so she enlisted the support of her fellow performing arts faculty to create monthly shows with only two rehearsals. She is a co-founder of eSe Teatro in Seattle and has worked as a dramaturg with Teatro Visíon in San Jose (Perla) and with Teatro Nuevo Mèxico (Electridcidad). She wrote a dissertation on women dressing as men in contemporary Latino productions, most of which were reimagining classical works. Since 2016, she has been working with Lakewood Playhouse as a stage manager and teaching artist. Her work as a stage manager includes Avenue Q, Wait Until Dark, and three Radio Show Galas. She won a “Woody” in 2017 for her work on The Rocky Horror Show. She will be stage managing the Radio Gala again this year. She is the co-founder of Screaming Butterflies Productions in Tacoma. Formed in 2019, their mission is to re-vision myth, community, and justice through imaginative, tenacious and unapologetic creativity. Last spring, she directed Bocón by Lisa Loomer, a play about a young boy travelling from Central America to the Border of Lights. She received the Tacoma Artist Initiative Program individual grant to fund this production’s free performances. She directed The Jungle Books Kids, Snow White and a process drama on the U.S. Constitution for Lakewood Institute of Theatre. |
